Vom Steinbruch ins Atelier
The mineralogical collection at the Museum für Naturkunde Berlin
Geoscientific collections comprise minerals, rocks, and fossils gathered over the past centuries from a wide variety of sites. In this book, the questions and findings of different academic disciplines are brought into relation with one and the same collection – namely through the rocks and minerals of the physician Karl Wilhelm Nose, who in 1814 donated a large part of the specimens he had assembled in the Siebengebirge and the Eifel to the newly founded Berlin University. Part of this holding, which is today preserved at the Museum für Naturkunde Berlin, has been explored artistically by Oliver Thie. In this process, art entered into dialogue with mineralogy and with the history of science.
